PEABODY STREET TO CLOSE FROM 5TH TO 7TH AVENUES ON MONDAY, APRIL 30TH

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Effective this Monday, April 30th, a section of Peabody Street between 5th Avenue and 7th Avenue will be temporarily closed to traffic for construction of the Korean Veterans Boulevard extension.

At the same time, 5th Avenue South (which is currently one-way for northbound traffic) will become a 2-way street between Peabody and Lafayette Street.

The Peabody Street closure is expected to be in effect until early June of this year. 5th Avenue will remain 2-way until the KVB project is completed in December.

The KVB Extension will be a new four-lane, median divided roadway providing a connection between 4th Avenue South and 8th Avenue South. It will terminate in a multi-lane roundabout at a new reconstructed intersection of 8th Avenue and Lafayette Street.

8TH AVENUE, LAFAYETTE STREET TRAFFIC SHIFT ON THURSDAY

The next phase of traffic control for construction of the Korean Veterans Boulevard Extension is scheduled to take place later this week, when travel lanes on 8^th Ave South and Lafayette Street will be shifted to accommodate building the project roundabout.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The next phase of traffic control for construction of the Korean Veterans Boulevard Extension is scheduled to take place later this week, when travel lanes on 8^th Ave South and Lafayette Street will be shifted to accommodate building the project roundabout.

No additional lane closings are planned with this phase, however 8^th Ave South will be routed onto temporary pavement along the west side of the proposed roundabout, and both directions of Lafayette Street traffic will be routed onto Lea Ave (which is currently one-way) between 7^th Ave and 8^th Ave.

Metro plans to implement the traffic change on Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in order to avoid impacting rush hour drivers, and police officers will be onsite to assist with traffic control. This phase is expected to remain in effect for approximately 6 months.

Due to the change in traffic movements and the extremely high level of activity in the construction zone, a special pedestrian detour has been constructed along 8^th Avenue to help ensure the safety of pedestrians who need to use the area.

To help drivers avoid congestion and potential traffic delays, Public Works suggests the following alternate routes into/out of the Central Business District and other areas of downtown:

2^nd Avenue South (one-way) for inbound travel and 4^th Avenue South (one-way) for outbound travel
Travel through The Gulch using Division Street and 12^th Avenue South to Demonbreun or Broadway, and 11^th Ave South to Charlotte Ave
Use Palmer Place and 10^th Avenue South to Demonbreun and avoid congestion at the 8^th Ave/Lafayette intersection.
From Lafayette, take Elm Street to 2^nd Avenue or 3^rd Avenue S for inbound travel.

KOREAN VETERANS BLVD. CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS UPDATE

Good progress has been made on new underground utility installations between 4th Avenue South and 8th Avenue South since the inception of construction in December 2011! These operations have been moving in an east to west fashion from 4th Avenue South towards 8th Avenue South and are now very noticeable in the area near the 8th Avenue South/Lafayette Street intersection. Underground utility construction is now also progressing on closed portions of Lafayette Street and 8th Avenue South.
